Gloria Anderson, MEd, RHIA, CCS is a Professor in the Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM) program teaching a variety of HIIM courses including ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding. She has worked in a variety of health settings in numerous roles. She has received numerous awards for her contributions to teaching and in the health information profession. Gloria volunteers within the city, state, and national health information organizations.

Employee Bio

Dr. Chalupny has 30 years experience in molecular biology and immunology including 18 years in Biotech.  She received her Ph.D. in Biology from Yale University, where she studied the role of the CD8 molecule in T cell signaling.  Her research at Immunex resulted in the identification of the receptor for the ULBP proteins (NKG2D/Dap10) and the role of ULBP/NKG2D binding in stimulating NK cell cytotoxicity.  At Amgen she worked on optimizing the properties of novel anti-cancer therapeutics.  Jan has been involved in science education for two decades.  She has received the NWABR Partner Award, the NWABR Alvin J. Thompson Award and the Washington State LASER Award.  In her present position at Shoreline Community College, Jan has an opportunity to do her favorite science education activities: teach/mentor both science teachers and students, work in the lab, develop curricula, and build research partnerships with local research institutions.

Employee Bio

Matthew Loper has over 25 years of teaching experience at the college level in the topics of biology, botany, environmental science and chemistry.  His past research interests include membrane transport, the effects of Acid Precipitation on plants and taxol biosynthesis by the Pacific yew.  Recently his focus has turned to conservation biology, particularly rare plant conservation.  He supervises an active undergraduate research program focusing on stream ecology and biodiversity assessment of local Boeing Creek Watershed.

I received my BS in Biology and MS in Marine-Estuarine Sciences at WWU.  My emphasis focused on the intertidal ecosystem and the adaptations of marine invertebrates.  I am a strong advocate for conservation and preservation of sensitive habitats, especially in and around Puget Sound.  I have been An instructor at the college level since 1996.  I have taught Biology for majors and non-majors, Zoology, Environmental Science, Oceanography and Marine Biology.  My research aspirations is focused on life in the intertidal zone and the adaptations of the species that live there.  I am always looking for students who are interested in being a part of Marine explorations

Kira Wennstrom joined the Shoreline Biology Department in 2005 after three years as associate professor of biology at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock and a four-year postdoctoral position at the University of Washington. Her research interests center on the structural and functional relationships among hormones, the brain, and behavior. While at the University of Washington, she studied the neuroendocrinology of song in white crowned sparrows. Her doctoral work focused on sex determination and sexual differentiation in whiptail lizards.
At Shoreline, her teaching style is interactive and inquiry-based, with a focus on building strong study skills. She has served in a number of leadership roles on campus including Faculty Senate Chair, Chair of the Strategic Planning/Budget Committee, and First Vice President of the faculty union.

Ben Wiggins is a professor of Biology; diving into the details of molecules and cells (and exploring ways that they impact patient's lives) is one of his favorite parts of teaching. Ben's education background is an MS in Molecular and Cellular Biology and a PhD in Science Education. Having taught science and education courses for 15 years at UW-Seattle, Ben is most excited to work with students who are coming to health sciences and biology careers from non-traditional tracks. Ben's NSF-sponsored research is in science education and professional development for college faculty. When he isn't working on a class, he is often coaching youth sports for his young son and daughter and experimenting in the kitchen.
