Employee Bio

From 1996 to 1999 Rachel David worked with survivors of sexual assault through all stages of the justice system as the Legal Advocate for Seattle Rape Relief. Rachel discovered that teaching was her passion while in this position doing training for volunteers, police officers, and prosecutors. Rachel loves teaching Gender and Women’s Studies because of the discipline's profound potential to affect students' lives. bell hooks writes "To teach in a manner that respects and cares for the souls of our students is essential if we are to provide the necessary conditions where learning can most deeply and intimately begin." (Teaching to Transgress, 1994). Rachel sees her role as an instructor as providing resources and opportunities for students to make discoveries about themselves, each other, and the world we live in through discussion and activities.

Employee Bio

Dr. Ernest Johnson is a professor of Multi-Cultural Studies in the Equity and Social Justice Department at Shoreline Community College, and adjunct faculty in the American Ethnic Studies department at the University of Washington. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Washington Department of Linguistics and M.A. from the University of Khartoum (Institute of African and Asian Studies). He has taught and lectured at over a dozen community colleges or universities over the past 40 years in various subjects ranging from ethnic studies, ESL, multicultural studies, Black studies, African culture, socio-linguistics, religious fundamentalism, and African American history. He has advised several student clubs and is a founding partner in a diversity and inclusion consulting business, with an emphasis on increasing the multicultural competency of hiring committees in the public and private sector.
